Laboratory of Textile Conservation (UCT) is focused on research in the field of degradation and conservation of historical and archaeological textiles and the laboratory offers the following services:
- identification of material fibres and weave structure using optical microscopy or FTIR spectroscopy (Nicolet iN10 optional with Ge crystal, Nicolet iZ10 optional with diamondcrystal)
- identification of accompanying materials (e.g. metals, paper, leather, adhesives) using mainly FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence analysis, SEM/EDS
- studying textile degradation (after artificial ageing in several types of environments) based on evaluation of changes to properties (e.g. colour, mechanical and chemical properties, average degree of polymerization) using colourimetry, viscometry, FTIR spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectrometry with integrating sphere, tensile strength and flexural rigidity measurement
- evaluation of the methods and materials for textile conservation.
