Portable analytical laboratory

Portable analytical laboratory (IIC). The analysis of paintings in-situ by portable devices in museums, galleries and other places is still mostly limited to the screening of the elemental composition by portable XRF (already in use at numerous customer workplaces; two devices are available in the ALMA laboratory). This portable laboratory expands the portfolio of portable analytical instruments, especially with spectroscopic methods, namely a portable FTIR spectrometer (Bruker ALPHA enabling both reflection and ATR measurements) and a portable Raman spectrometer with a mobile microscope (B&W Tek i-Raman PRO). The efficient combination of chemical analysis with molecular spectroscopies enables the non-invasive on-site direct detection of most materials on the surface layers of investigated artworks. Analytical screening is especially suitable when a decision on restoration is being made, in the first stages of restoration (e.g. in probes) or in all cases when transport of the artwork and/or sampling is not possible. It can also be part of art-historical research.
